Working in photo editing and making TV advertisements

Question

Assalaamu alaykum. My interest is in making TV advertisements, photo editing, and animation, but I have not started any work on those things, so I just want to know whether they are permissible in Islam?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

TV advertisements are permissible if the advertised commodity or service is lawful and the advertisement itself does not include any Sharia violations.

If the advertiser is paid for the advertisement, then the Ijaarah contract (hiring) must not involve any Sharia violations such as Jahaalah (ignorance) and Gharar (uncertainty).

Ibn Qudaamah may Allaah have mercy upon him wrote, “It is impermissible to hire someone to carry out unlawful activities such as adultery, playing prohibited musical instruments, wailing for the dead, and prohibited singing ... these activities are prohibited and it is therefore impermissible to hire someone to carry these out ... It is also impermissible to hire someone to write prohibited poetry (or lyrics) or commit a religious innovation or any other prohibited act.” [Al-Mughni]

As for photo editing, the ruling on photography and the relevant editing and developing of photos depends on the content of these photos... If the person's work in this field is limited to lawful things, then his work is lawful and the earnings it yields are lawful. If the work involves unlawful things, then it is impermissible to do such work.

Allah knows best.
