Working in institute that lies to market its courses

Question

I work as a trainer in an institute. The marketing department of the institute often lies to the students in order to get them enrolled into the courses of the institute. I do not lie to the students and am not involved in the marketing. My job is to train the students in a variety of courses. Is my income halal?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

As long as your work in the institute has nothing to do with false marketing, there is no harm on you in working there, and you may benefit from your earnings from it. But you should advise the people in charge of the institute to avoid lying because it is forbidden and it has evil consequences.

The hadith reads, “….and if both parties spoke the truth and described the defects and qualities of the goods, then they would be blessed in their transaction, but if they told lies or hid the defects, then there will be no blessings in their sale transaction.” [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim].

Also, cheating and deceit are two dispraised and forbidden qualities, and a believer who fears his Lord is not characterized by them, nor should he practice them at all.

It is confirmed that Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said, “Whoever cheats us is not one of us.” [Muslim]

Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, also narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said, “Whoever cheats is not of me (i.e. not one of my followers).” [Muslim]

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) also said, “Whoever cheats us is not one of us, and deceit and cheating are in Hellfire.” [At-Tabaraani]

This includes all types of deceit and cheating in any field and against any person, as indicated by the wording of the hadith.

Allah knows best.
