Working in a place where music is played

Question

assalamualaikum,I have been offered a halal job and the pay is good however I noticed on my interview that they play music in the background. There are actually some few women who work in the business however they would not be working in the same department and section as me, so I would not have to look or talk to them. Does this render my job haram? Please note, I am from the UK where it is very difficult to get a completely halal job, jobs usually have some kind of haram in them like insurance, riba, alcohol, haram foods, betting, gambling, free mixing, cigarettes, haram clothes, haram adornments, perfumes, etc. Alhamdullilah this job only has music in the background I have been looking for a halal job for 2 years now, I really need a job as I am very poor and furthermore my mother is forcing me to do it as we are in need of the money. Perhaps after starting work, I could request my employer to turn the background music off, hopefully he will listen. Otherwise, I could listen to nasheeds on my phone this way I would not have to listen to the music

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Since you are in need of that job and cannot find any other job, and since this job is lawful and does not directly involve committing any prohibited act or helping commit it, there is no harm in you taking that job to acquire your basic necessities of life and pay for your needs.

As for the music that you will hear in your workplace, you can ask your employer to turn it off. If he refuses, then it is sufficient for you to dislike listening to it in your heart, to avoid listening to it deliberately and to preoccupy yourself by listening to anything else that is permissible.

We implore Allaah to relieve your burden, facilitate your affairs and provide for you from sources you do not anticipate.

Allaah Knows best.
